Then:
Star
With to-day’s announcement of the opening next Tuesday of the Star Theatre, Invermay, comes the fulfilment of an ambition on the part of the directors of Star Theatres Pty. Ltd. to extend their chain of theatres to the suburbs of Launceston, with such a model theatre as has been enjoyed by local citizens who have been fortunate enough to holiday in Sydney—the home of the intimate and modern luxury theatre

The Examiner, 2 October 1937

Today the soon to be Star Theatre had a Pre-Renovation Easer Festival, so I went along for a look.

On entering. There’s a memorabilia display over in the back corner there and the stage is the other side of the black wall at the back.

To the right of the entrance.

To the left of entrance.

The memorabilia display had a lot of movie posters

Mw1_4529
and, well, memorabilia.

Mw1_4524
Also lovely plans of the original construction and the current redevelopment. That’s the 1937 ground floor (light yellow bit is the stage & seating, green is the other bits a function theatre needs.)

Mw1_4494
The seating area is currently a bit of a… void.

This photo of the upstairs dress circle was actually a “test photo” (Is this memory card that was giving errors now actually working?) but I like the lighting effect. With no external windows, the seating area is actually rather dark.  Camera makes it look a lot lighter, but at the expense of slightly grainy photos.

Mw1_4520
I wonder what’s up here…

Mw1_4519
The foyer for the dress circle. The metal work on the staircase is lovely. Also note the doors.

Mw1_4513
Ceiling details are harder to see because they’re all white.

Going in now…

Mw1_4536
I said the lower seating area was a void! Can you see the “grates” on the far wall?

Mw1_4548
Or maybe they’re grilles. They seem to be covering windows.

Mw1_4555
More wall details. Like the ceiling, hard to see because it’s all white.

Mw1_4547
Close-up.

Mw1_4554
I think the little yellow things are heaters.

Mw1_4560
More wall 🙂

Mw1_4550
The wall of lit windows at the back is the projection room.

Mw1_4541
I was getting frustrated because the chairs are grainy in every photo. Every photo, even when the rest of the… oh that’s right, they’re covered in a”furry” material. They’re supposed to look like that.

Mw1_4545
Turns out rows of red chairs with wooden floors and numbers are really fun to take photos of, but I have just included two 🙂

And that’s the end!

*Actually the outside photo is from March last year, but there is more sun and less cars. If you really want to see one from today, there’s this one.
